Also Castelfranco Veneto had its surrounding wall, wanted by the municipality of Treviso, after the year 1000, to stop the ambitions of injury of the neighbouring cousins Padua and Vicenza.Its advanced position offered it the chance to be free (franco) from any duty. The most characteristic note of the city of Treviso is represented by the Castle that enclosing the old town and was heavily defended by seven towers (now there are six). Eventful is the history of this wall city passed from the hands of the “trevisani” (after a short domination by the Ezzelini), to those of the Carraresi before and to those of Maximilian of Hasburg then, until the arrival of the Serenissima Reopublic of Venice, after which the city was divided between the French and the Austrians before becoming Italian.Of architectural interest is the Duomo of 1700 where, on its inside, you can admire the famous "Castelfranco altarpiece", a painting that bears the signature of the great 16th-century painter George Gasparini, known as Giorgione.
